As I’ve stated before, I like to have a schedule but I also like to keep it flexible. Thursday is my “scheduled rest day” but I play it by ear and work my rest days around real life – I do always try to complete every workout for the week but I am comfortable with moving the days around however I need to make it work.  In short, I’m committed to doing the training, but I’m not committed to doing this on Monday or this other thing on Tuesday. Flexibility is key.

Also, I want to address the time commitment of this schedule and how it works with our family life. For the majority of the bike rides, I am either going out with Nick just after work before we pick the kids up from preschool OR we are all going out (using the bike trailer) and making it a family excursion. I’ll say to Nick “I need to get in 4 miles on the bike today” as we’re leaving for work in the morning and then both of us knows that one way or the other, I’m getting those miles in. Fortunately, Nick is a great training buddy and he’s down to tag along (rather, leave me in the dust) on my workouts.

Taking swim classes did keep me away from the family a bit more. Classes were an hour long and held M-Th over a two week period. It wasn’t ideal because it meant I wouldn’t get home until after seven each night (after I’d already been at work all day) and that made for some late nights trying to make dinner after class and also spend time with Nick and the kids. That being said, it was only 8 days and it was a sacrifice that I was willing to make in order to learn some necessary swimming skills. Now that the class is over, I can either swim in the lake and make a family excursion out of it OR I can swim in the pool at our house (which is teensy) and the kids can come there too.  It’s also a nice place to lounge around afterwards :)

What works for you? Do you like to “escape to the gym” or do you need a fitness plan that incorporates the whole family? Neither way is right in and of itself – what’s right is what works for you! Go on, share how y’all are makin it work!

P.S. Do ya like my pasty white legs and super tan arms? Its a nice combo ;)
