Intro to Sight Words

The reading list for this week is:

Below “Jack and his action figure, Guy, have many adventures together, and the tall, narrow staircase in Jack’s house provides the perfect setting. Jack and Guy climb mountains, visit cities, and explore forests. But one day Guy falls down a hole in the stairs and it’s up to Jack to rescue him. What is going on below the stairs–only Guy knows.”

Big Pig, Little Pig “Despite their differences, Big Pig and Little Pig are great friends. When they get together, these piggy pals have nothing but fun–and so does the reader. ”

Bones, Bones, Dinosaur Bones “Six small paleontologists search for bones. When they find them, they dig them up, wrap them, and load them on a truck, bound for the museum. There, they carefully put together the bones of a giant dinosaur. In bright, bold, exuberant pictures, with a text that is just right for reading or chanting aloud, Byron Barton looks at just what happens to the bones left behind by dinosaurs of long, long ago.”

The Foot Book “Dr. Seuss’s characters explore the zany world of feet.”

My Garden “The girl in this book grows chocolate rabbits, tomatoes as big as beach balls, flowers that change color, and seashells in her garden. How does your garden grow?”

From Maple Trees to Maple Syrup “An introduction to food processes and production”

Skills we are working on:

Sight words! We are now using flash cards to practice our sight words. I picked up a packet of flashcards from Target. We pick out a few cards to practice each night. Again, we don’t want our reading activities to become so structured that they are no longer fun – we simply want to encourage reading skills while we are playing and getting ready for bed. The whole point is that reading should be fun!
